Tell President Biden to address the #RootCauses of Migration from Central America
Add your voice to a new regional network of more than 330 grassroots and faith-based organizations from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and the U.S. that have joined together to address the root causes of poverty, unemployment, climate change, corruption, and violence that force families to migrate north. Together we have the power to fundamentally change U.S. policy toward Central America.
TO PRESIDENT BIDEN
You have a historic opportunity to fundamentally change U.S. policy toward Central America to address the root causes of poverty, unemployment, climate change, corruption, and violence that force so many people from the region to leave home and migrate north. With Central America reeling from two devastating hurricanes, the pandemic, and a new wave of refugees, we call on you to take these five immediate and concrete steps when you take office.
- In response to the devastation of Hurricane Eta and Iota, ask the Secretary of Homeland Security to extend Temporary Protected Status to people from areas affected by the hurricanes, provide additional humanitarian assistance, and commit to a large-scale initiative to help small farmers adapt to climate change.
- Provide funding and technical support to countries in Central America to access and distribute the COVID-19 vaccine, with a focus on reaching the most vulnerable communities in the region.
- Inform Guatemala and Honduras that annual certification by the State Department that they are combating corruption and impunity and are therefore eligible for U.S. aid, will depend on rejoining the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala and the Mission to Support the Fight Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras.
- Rapidly end the abusive Title 42 expulsion policy, Trump’s Remain in Mexico program and so-called Safe Third Country Agreements and make root causes rather than punitive deterrence the approach of the U.S. to migration from Central America.
- Appoint people who have direct experience with grassroots community-led development to key roles in your administration, including the Administrator of USAID, Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator responsible for Latin America and the Caribbean at USAID, and vacant board positions at the Inter-American Foundation.
