Tell President Biden to send life-saving COVID Vaccines to Haiti NOW
Despite an alarming rise in deadly strains of COVID, Haiti is the only country in the Western Hemisphere to not have received a single vaccine dose. Hospital beds are full, oxygen is running out, people are dying but Haitians are still waiting. While doses expire in the U.S. Tell President Biden to cut through the red tape and history of ignoring the suffering of the Haitian people to directly and immediately send life-saving vaccines to Haiti. UPDATE 7/15/21: We just got the good news that the U.S. shipped 500,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine to Haiti. Thanks for everyone's efforts in pushing for this. It's a start - enough to vaccinate 2% of Haitians - but let's keep pressing for enough doses and support efforts by OPODNE and other organizations to make sure vaccines are distributed equitably and effectively. THANKS!
Dear President Biden,
As Haitian-Americans, religious congregations, and people of faith supporting our brothers and sisters in Haiti at a time of great need, we are alarmed that Haiti is one of the few countries in the world that has yet to receive a single COVID vaccine dose, despite the recent deadly rise in COVID cases.
As the poorest country in the Hemisphere, Haiti is the least prepared to deal with a deadly wave of new virus variants. We are increasingly hearing reports of hospital beds being full, oxygen in short supply, and more and more people dying.
Haiti now has a plan supported by trusted non-governmental organizations to administer vaccines. The country is ready to receive doses. And the U.S. is facing the moral tragedy of unused life-saving vaccines expiring on our watch.
Yet, no date has been given when the country will receive its first doses through COVAX, and the doses that have been promised are a fraction of what is needed. The consequences of too-little, too-late vaccinations in Haiti would be devastating for Haitians and the region.
We need your leadership to cut through the red tape and long tendency to neglect the suffering of the Haitian people to directly and immediately provide a large number of vaccine doses to Haiti, one of our closest neighbors.
Your leadership in getting doses on planes now will save lives and send a clear message to the Haitian people that the U.S. is on their side as they work to rebuild their democracy and economy.
Please do the right thing in this moment of moral urgency.
Sincerely,
[Add your name and/or the name of your organization]
